Srikandi by Celestial4ever Srikandi by Celestial4ever
Back in the old days, Srikandi is a title given to female warriors who are well versed in the craft of Pencak Silat, a form of martial arts that is popular among Malay folks (originating from Indonesia, which then spread into neighbouring islands). It is more on the offensive side, since it was developed for war. It ranges from hand-to-hand combat, to an assortment of exotic weapons. The most popular choice of course is the keris.

In fact, there are many disciplines to Silat, and I recall a few that is especially designed for women (I remember my brother telling me the story of a princess/a woman who created the craft, and challenged that no man shall marry her unless if he could take her down. No man could).

As far as I can say, it is a serious art, especially if mixed with black magic, mainly Dabus. Nothing good can come from that (My cousin had this experience once - he got thrown across the ring by a single punch, and some of his ribs were broken during a Silat competition while sparring with a very peculiar opponent).

As for the deer creature, well... before religion, there was animism.

The "Seni Silat Puteri Mandi" of Indonesia also share a similar legend that, a certain "princess" invented the system when she defended herself against several male attackers when she was "bathing".

That must be the one then :) I don't know the full story, but I would love to study lots of legends and folklores and trace their origin

Thank you :) Although, I may not be accurate about some parts though - not much material I can reference to at that time.

I believe there is one form of silat that is common among girls and woman: Silat Gayung. This involves throwing the gayung, the main weapon of choice, towards peeping toms. ;)

However, this type of silat does exist.

Now THAT'S a skill I have yet to hone :D also, the Silat Mangkuk - compulsory to conduct in the kitchen when your husband or anyone irritates you.

Nice. Although I never really am into Silat. My impression of Silat has always been the Hang Tuah vs Hang Jebat kind. Lol. I prefer karate

Yeah, that's one of the most told story. But I like watching silat where it's raw and actually fought - so eerily deadly despite its flair. I read somewhere that it is one of the banned martial arts in UFC (possibly because it's really fatal if you're not careful with how you hit your opponent).

Never got the chance to try any other martial arts, but I'm happy I took up Tae-Kwon-Do and Capoeira :) One other I'd like to try is the eskrima, especially with the kali sticks =P

Thanks :) I studied animation in Multimedia University; but when it comes to illustrations, I'm mostly self-taught (or heavily influenced by my friends) :)

Oh wows. Silat. Last time I wanted to join in school, but my mom wouldn't let me. I never knew why. But I remember one of the reasons/excuses she mentioned was it being useless in the modern world. I wonder... >.>

It's not that bad, really - I tried it for a while but I found my studies more important (unfortunately). In fact, there should be no excuse to learn self-defense in the modern world (the world is full of crazies, so it may come in handy).
